Upon learning of Pfizer, Inc.’s intention to cease all production activities at its Terre Haute plant by the middle of 2009, employees in its testing laboratory determined that an excellent opportunity existed for a company to be successful providing regulatory-compliant laboratory testing services to both pharmaceutical and food processing companies that more and more are outsourcing that type of work. In October 2008, five individuals previously employed by Pfizer formed Midwest Compliance Laboratories, LLC in Terre Haute. After purchasing equipment and developing the required infrastructure, they began offering analytical and microbiological services as well as method development, foreign matter and stability services.
Midwest Compliance Laboratories approached WCISBDC for help researching the size and composition of the pharmaceutical and food processing industries in the Midwest as well as a to obtain a listing of specific companies to target for potential sales. The company has achieved profitability with steadily increasing sales, which in 2010 were double the previous year, and employees have increased by 400%.
