The Harrison County Chamber referred Kelly Write to the Southeast Indiana SBDC in September 2006. Kelly was interested in starting a uniform and related accessories shop. Business Advisor Bill Cord helped Kelly with site selection, reviewed the terms and conditions of a proposed lease, examined appropriate accounting software, provided demographic research, product mix and pricing formulas, discussed marketing strategies and reviewed her business financials.
Kelly’s Uniforms and More grew steadily. Sales increased from $1,800 during her first month to a record high of $12,700 in May 2008. The “high month” in sales resulted from a special spring sale-in which everything was reduced 25% or more. Some of the older inventory was sold at even greater discount. New markets have opened up beyond the Harrison County location to include Washington, Orange and Floyd Counties.
“The SBDC told me in a very polite but not “sugar coated” way how to establish and manage my business. Their help with everything from the initial lease terms to product mix and pricing has been invaluable. My experience with Bill Cord and the ISBDC has been great.” – Kelly Wright
